The Awful Truth About Television: "Heavy" TV watchers are twice as likely to be obese

Studies show: TV makes you fat

This large amount of time spent motionlessly staring at a screen is also hazardous to your health and girth. Numerous studies show a relationship between TV watching and obesity. The most striking were several studies published in The American Journal of Public Health. These studies found that people who watched three or more hours of television per day were almost twice as likely to be obese than people who watched less than one hour per day. Men, women, and children all had similar results. The waistlines of men, women, and children are all victims of their TV-watching habit.

40 studies found children's TV watching was related to weight

Reviewing 40 recent studies involving TV and childhood obesity, a Kaiser Permanente study found a definite link between the amount of time children watch TV and their weight. The review also found that interventions that reduce children’s media time resulted in weight loss.

It is common sense that TV will likely make you heavier

This issue, however, does not need the benefit of numerous studies. It is common sense to expect that people who watch a lot of TV are more likely to be heavier. Almost any other activity burns more calories than watching TV. Only sleep burns fewer calories. Talking on the phone, reading a book, doing the dishes—all burn more calories than watching television. With the national average of four and a half hours per day, the extra calories burned just by turning off the TV can add up quickly.

Commercials sabotage diets

Then, there are those nefarious junk food commercials. The mouthwatering hamburgers, candy bars, or luscious desserts practically beg you to consume them from the screen. There are approximately 32 commercials on every hour-long TV show. A significant portion of these commercials is for fast food and junk food. What healthy diet could stand the onslaught of these sinister, mouthwatering, commercials?

Where did that bag of chips go?

Finally, many people snack in front of the TV, usually with junk food such as potato chips, soda pop, or candy. In the zombie state that people usually fall into while watching TV, it is very easy to consume large amounts of food, simultaneously absorbing both the images and the food. “Where did that bag of potato chips go?” bewildered viewers ask.

Push a button and lose weight

The conclusion to this is obvious. Turn off your TV if you are trying to lose weight. It is the first step to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Turn off your TV and go outside. Turn off your TV and follow that exercise routine you started last New Year's.* Turn off your TV and do something fun with your friends or family. Turn off your TV and enjoy the rest of your life.

Classic Television DVDs Bring Rodney Dangerfield Back to the Small Screen

He was recognized by his trademark phrase - “I don’t get no respect.”

Born on November 22, 1921 in Babylon, New York, Rodney Dangerfield began writing jokes at age 15 and performing his comedy by his late teens. For ten years, he struggled as a stand up comedian and worked as a singing waiter to make ends meet. When his comedy career failed to really take off, Dangerfield, who had been working in entertainment as Jack Roy, left show business for a regular job. He spent the 1950’s selling aluminum siding in New Jersey while supporting his first wife and two children.

He took another chance at show business after his divorce in 1961 and became known for the rest of his life as Rodney Dangerfield. By this time, he was approaching his fortieth birthday. His big break came when he appeared as a guest on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” He did what few people were able to do – he made Ed Sullivan laugh. During the 1960’s he made the rounds of many of the most popular variety shows. He performed his standup on “The Joey Bishop Show,” “The Merv Griffin Show” and “The Jackie Gleason Show.” In 1969 he made his first of 35 appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” In addition to his gigs on television, he spent his time making the rounds of comedy clubs throughout the country.

In 1969, the comedian opened his own standup comedy club, Dangerfield’s in New York City. From its inception, it has been one of the most popular comedy clubs in America, receiving rave reviews by top newspapers and entertainment guides. Since Dangerfield’s opened its doors almost 40 years ago it has seen the likes of Jay Leno, Jim Carey, Chris Rock, Andrew Dice Clay, Tim Allen and Jerry Seinfeld grace its stage. Many of the comedy club’s biggest draws find themselves as guests on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” or “Late Night With David Letterman.”

Having cemented his place in stand up comedy history, Dangerfield turned his attention to acting. He had his first movie role in the 1971 film The Projectionist and had a role on the television show “Benny and Barney: Las Vegas Undercover” later in the decade. The acting roles came slowly but in 1980 he landed a role that made him a household name. He starred as the obnoxious real estate developer Al Czervik in the comedy smash Caddy Shack. Suddenly people who didn’t know much about comedians knew all about Rodney Dangerfield.

He followed Caddy Shack with two other 1980’s comedies, Easy Money and Back To School. In 1991, he made the animated movie Rover Dangerfield, the story of a dog that gets no respect. Throughout his career, his line about getting no respect was his trademark.

Dangerfield branched out into a serious role next. He played the abusive father to Juliette Lewis’ character in the controversial film Natural Born Killers. It has been reported that Dangerfield was allowed to write his own lines for the role. This was to be his only serious film role. He followed it with more comedies like Meet Wally Sparks and The Godson. In 2000, the almost 80-year-old comedian starred alongside Adam Sandler in Little Nicky

His very last acting role was that of God in 2005’s Angels with Angels. It was released posthumously. Dangerfield died on October 5, 2004. He had fallen into a coma after heart surgery and never regained consciousness. His tombstone reflects his comedy. It reads “Rodney Dangerfield – There Goes the Neighborhood.

His comedy career spanned over 60 years. In addition to all of his stage and screen accomplishments during those years, he also won two awards for his achievements. In 1981 he won a Grammy Award for his comedy recording titled No Respect. In 1995 the American Comedy Awards honored him with a Creative Achievement Award.

One of his lesser-known achievements was that he was the first entertainment personality to have his own website. In 1995 he created Rodney.com, which is still in existence today

During Rodney Dangerfield’s career he had success on the comedy stage, in film, and on the television. He gave countless other comedians the chance to show their stuff on the stage at his own comedy club. His trademark line, “I don’t get no respect” will forever be associated with the comedian who in spite of his onstage persona was loved and respected by millions of fans.

Classic Television Show DVD Popularity On The Rise

In recent years, it has become a growing trend to buy and watch classic television shows on DVD for your family entertainment. The availability of some of the all-time favorite classic TV shows on DVD and video has become pervasive throughout the U.S. This allows families to not only catch up on the past seasons of the television shows that they might have missed, but to go back to the classics that we and our parents grew up watching. It is now easier than ever to find seasons of shows that were produced 30 or 40 years ago, right alongside the DVDs of the television shows that are currently on the air. America seems to have become infatuated with remembering the characters and situations produced during the early years of television. What are the reasons for the increased popularity of classic television shows?

Classic television enthusiasts represent a large market of consumers. There were many classic sitcoms and variety shows that were aired between the 50s, 60s and 70s, that represent not only a large generation of viewers but a very powerful time in American history. They speak for the events of that age and include social and political commentary that goes right along with when they were made. Therefore, they are nostalgic entertainment and fun to relive. For those that watched these shows when they originally aired, classic TV DVDs allow them to relive that time in their life. For those that were too young to watch them when they first ran, DVDs allow them to appreciate the classics as new entertainment.

Classic television shows now available on DVD and video have created a new way to ensure that these memories are not lost. As more and more popular televisions shows became available on DVD in the 90s, there became a growing interest to see older television sitcoms on DVD as well. Shows like ER, Star Trek and The Simpsons were being sold at a tremendous rate which led to more and more people asking what happened to the other shows they once loved. Few television networks are able to show classic television programs which left a large gap of potential entertainment untapped and potentially gone forever. Without the DVD releases of these shows, the newer generations would have little knowledge about the early time in television history. But by allowing the distribution of these old sitcoms and variety shows through DVD, all generations can watch and love some of the classic shows and entertainers. Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie and the comedic genius of Bob Hope can now be watched, remembered and cherished by those that remember when they were the stars of television.

In general, home entertainment and the purchase of DVDs has become one of the most popular entertainment expenditures for the American home. With televisions and DVD players become more sophisticated and movie tickets become more expensive, homes are opting to outfit their home to take on the task of keeping the family entertained. This means that more and more shows and movies to watch are also necessary. There is no shortage of network television to watch but there is a shortage on time to watch them all. When families know that they can purchase an entire season of a television shows on DVD in three to six months, they will do so. More and more we are finding families picking up classic television DVDs to watch because they weren’t able to watch them when they aired originally. With the television DVD market, it is now possible to follow the storylines of television shows that are on at exactly the same time. This is something that wasn't possible even ten years ago.

Classic television shows are put onto DVDs so that a whole new generation of fans can watch them. Imagine a company that can make money off of a television series even twenty years after it aired. It no longer matters if a television show is currently on the air or not. With the new trend for putting classic television DVDs in consumers’ hands, classic shows are able to have a second chance at life. Some viewers can find shows from their childhood and enjoy the nostalgia that goes along with them, or they can teach their own children about the shows that they used to love. In the past, once a television show was no longer on the air, there was no way to see it again. However, now shows can be enjoyed over and over again. These shows are important to many viewers in lots of different ways and by putting these classic television shows on video and DVD, they can be popular for years to come.

How to Get Free Movie Downloads

Movies are a big business and the internet is helping them along quite well. Thanks to the new technology that allows movies to be played on the computer you are easily capable of having an entire movie collection right on your desktop providing you have the right type of computer. The free movie download is something that entices a good many people to make the change to the internet format of movies and all that comes with it. Barring any unforeseen circumstances in the near future, people will spend a fair amount of time downloading their favorite films right onto their computers and then playing them on the DVD players and such that grace their entertainment centers. But there is the matter of copyright and piracy laws that you should be aware of. There is not always the legal right to be downloading a movie and you should be very careful of the people who offer them for nothing.

A free movie download can be gotten legally through a good many channels. That means that the download of the movie is free but not the site in general. Most often you will see that many of the sites that offer the free movie download do so by offering unlimited downloading for a flat monthly fee. This is opposed to the sites that charge per download and allow for you to rack up quite the large bill in the meantime. This is truly the only legal way to get a free movie download because the sites are required to pay a certain percentage of the money they take in to royalties. So that way they do not violate the many copyright laws that govern the whole movie industry.

There is a set fee for the free movie download sites and you can manage to get some of the sites for free if you know what you are doing. Many of these places will offer the first month for free and then require you to pay from there on out. So if you can manage to get all of the movies that you want in the first month then cancel the subscription then you will actually have gotten a free movie download. Not all of the sites allow for this though. Many of them have minimum times that you must be a member to get the free month. You should read all of the fine print before signing up for anything.

Television-Which Would You Buy LCD/Plasma/Regular?

There are a huge number of people looking to buy a decent television. Myself included! We have to bang on the top of my television whenever it decides to go snowy.

We call her Betsy and it seems like she has a mind of her own. Betsy only seems to mess up when our best shows are on.

Even my seven year old grandson knows the drill. We get a real kick out of watching him trek across the living room floor to give her the good ole one two.

Seems to me like flat screen televisions are the way to go. They seem to be able to do unusual things. However, believe it or not the regular televisions sets are enjoying increased sales. I thought that was great news.

Everyone felt for sure that those fancy LCD’s and Plasma televisions were going to leave the regulars in the dust. But not so! The reason for this is probably two fold.

The fancy ones cost too much. That’s a no-brainer. I admit I have been under pressure of late to replace Betsy. I don’t know what all the fuss is about. My grandson and I don’t mind giving Betsy a whack every now and then.

Anyway, my point is this. I went shopping for a newbie. I thought that while I was there, I would ask the price of a fancy LCD/Plasma. When they told me, it only confirmed what I already knew. I was in the wrong aisle.

Secondly, the quality of the regulars has increased dramatically. So people are still buying them up. It’s amazing. The small regulars are crystal clear. You have to be careful though. They have programmed some of the regulars to do some fancy footwork. As a consequence some of the regular televisions can set you back quite a few paces.

When shopping for a television it's important to consider the space that you have allotted for it. You would smile at the number of people who come home with a television that is obviously way too big for their living room.

Do you have a stand for it already? Or do you have a cabinet were the doors swing shut? Make sure the cabinet is deep enough for the backside of the set.

How about color schemes? They come in so many colors, shapes and sizes. While quality is important size and color are equally important. I prefer a floor model wood grained television. They’re like Cadillac’s in your living room.

My grown children like to hang things from the walls. They mount wall televisions and even their stereos and speakers. I get a bad neck holding my head up looking at their wall mount television sets.

They tell me the trick is to lie down with the remote and watch television. First of all, I’m not accustomed to lying all over anyone else’s couch. Even if it is my daughters couch.

I’ll have to replace old Betsy soon. That television set is ancient, but has served us well. On the last trip to the service department the technician told me in no uncertain terms not to bring Betsy back. He doesn’t have anymore parts to fix her. They don’t make them like Betsy anymore. My grandson and I will miss her.

Types Of High Definition Television (HDTV)

High-definition television (HDTV) became popular at the end of the 1900’s. They were in essence super TV’s boasting digital surround sound, hi-tech resolution, widescreen-compatible for old-time movie formats. But amid the different types that have popped up, there can be confusion for consumers, so let’s take a look at what’s out there today.

Analog

An analog television receives signals via satellite, over the air or through a cable; whereas older (standard) televisions accepted signals from radio waves transformed into sounds and screen images.

Digital

Digital television (DTV) converts signals for DVD players to analog. However, limited pixels limit resolution for viewers, affecting quality imaging on the television screen.

Reportedly U.S. broadcasts are moving in the direction of DTV transmission, transmitting video and sound data zeros and ones over wave transmissions, basically using the UHF spectrum over the air with a 6 MHz bandwidth, similar to analog transmitting.

Features and benefits of DTV include

• Better quality image.
• Better resolution with big screen TVs
• Better video graphic imaging.
• Multicasting.
• Interactive content can be transmitted.
• High-definition (HDTV) compatibility.

Bad news: older standard analog televisions cannot show DTV productions. So you may still need two TVs at this time, depending upon cable and how late you stay up and want good content, etc.

HD

HDTV is part of DTV. It carries the highest standards for DTV, as set forth by the Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC) for digital television.

Of the18 digital broadcast formats for video, the top tier for HDTV needs to reflect the following over analog and other lower standards with respect to:
Aspect ratio - HDTV must have a 16:9 aspect ratio; standard TV only needs a 4:3.

Resolution - HDTV needs high resolution, like up to 1920 x 1080 pixels; standard TV only needs 704 x 480 pixels.

Frame rate – HDTV needs the highest frame rate (like screen speed), at least 60 frames per second. Standard TV is under 24.

The mains things to note with high-definition visual and sound are twofold. Number one, the television station needs to be transmitting high-definition signals. Without that much, no need to continue. And number two, you need to have the right television equipment to receive and view the high-definition transmissions.

So get informed and check out your systems and equipment! It’ll make upgrading to HDTV that much easier – and enjoyable for your family.

Reality Bites Of Television

Everyone loves to reminisce about the “good old days:” the movies and shows we watched, the things we did. We tell the younger generations about our all-time favorite TV shows and films and scoff when they don’t have a clue what we’re talking about. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could play them a few episodes of that old-time show or cherished movie? Now, with Rare TV, you have the chance to!

Rare TV specializes in finding and reproducing rare television shows, films, games, and music. With hundreds of DVDs already restored and in stock, there’s no doubt that Rare TV will continue to increase its inventory. Currently, the company has music DVDs, pilot episode DVDs, full television season DVDs, and just about any movie you can think of on DVD.

The shocking truth is that many actors are struggling and finding it difficult to pay their rent let alone live up to the 'stereo typical' fantasy lifestyle that most people perceive. Acting is a very hard game to master and if your sole purpose is to come into this profession just for the money then I urge you to think again because unless you have a true passion for this craft, you may find yourself banging your head against a brick wall waiting for the next part to arrive that will pay you the mega dollars that you've been yearning for.

Simply, how much any particular actor does make will be determined by many factors, such as: what level the play or film is considered to be, how many roles they have already been in, and for stage acting, the length of time spent in a said role.

In the first instance, the level of the play is decided by the professional quality of the said theater. For instance, everyone knows of Broadway, it’s the first thing that comes to mind when a person thinks about theatre and making it big on stage. This is probably the highest level where the actor would make the most money. Stepping down from there is off-Broadway, followed by off-off Broadway. Though all are professional theaters, with each progressive step down, is a bet that the salary will decrease. In addition to theatre, film also has levels, from television stars, to television movie stars, to the big screen and again each progressive step will be followed by a different actors salary.

Television or what they call “boob tube” evolved in the early 1930’s. There has been a lot of development as the years passed. Currently the most talked about when it comes to televisions are the so called “Plasma TV”.

Now, what exactly is a Plasma TV? Maybe some of you would just say that it is a wide slim TV that you can hang around in your room where you want it or when you want it. Now, the bottom line is this, Plasma TV is not just your ordinary TV. The display that you will actually see is made up of thousand cells. These cells are glass compartments infused with a certain gas called “neon-xenon gas”. This gas is now plasma suspended.

So what now is plasma? Plasma is a matter that contains number of particles that are electrically charged. When the neon –xenon gases are then electrically charged, it will give phosphors of different colors, such as red, blue and green. These colored elements are the pixels that are contained in the Plasma TV.
